How to Register as a Sole Trader with HMRC
Starting a new business is an exciting step. However, you must let HMRC know that you are self-employed. Here is a simple walkthrough to help you register without any fuss.
When do I need to register?
You must register if your total self-employed sales (before expenses) go over £1,000 in a single tax year. If you start trading during the 2026/27 tax year (from April 2026 to April 2027), you need to register by 5 October 2027.
The registration steps
- Create a Government Gateway account: If you do not have one yet, go to the HMRC website and set up a secure sign in.
- Register for Self Assessment: Log in to your gateway account and select the option to register as a sole trader.
- Wait for your UTR number: HMRC will mail a 10-digit Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR) to your address within 10 working days.
- Activate the service: Use the activation code HMRC sends you to link Self Assessment to your online tax dashboard.
What details do I need to provide?
Make sure you have your name, home address, date of birth, National Insurance number, business name (using your personal name is fine), and start date ready before you begin the online application.
